Junior High Online Learning at St. Gabriel Education Centre

Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools offers online education for students in grades 7-9 through St. Gabriel Education Centre. This program is open to any student in Alberta. Our program is highly flexible and customizable - it works well for elite athletes, students with chronic illness, or students who find a hybrid model of learning an effective way to meet their learning needs.

NOTE - This program is different than the At Home Learning program offered during COVID-19 Pandemic Response.

If you would like to register for this program, please navigate to the Quick Links on our homepage or click HERE. Select 2024-2025 to register for the next school year. If you have any questions or would like to talk about whether our online program is the right fit for your child, please call us at 780-459-6616.

How does St. Gabriel Education Centre junior high online learning work?

Students are offered daily synchronous and asynchronous learning with a teacher who specializes in both the subject matter and online learning. Our teachers are experienced online teachers! Teachers are available throughout the day to answer questions or meet with students. Students are also welcome to come to school in person if they want.

Students will take all 4 core subjects: math, science, LA and social plus religion, health, and PE. Course work is prepared by the teachers and assessed by teachers.

Exams are offered online or in person at St. Gabriel Education Centre. The grade 9 PAT will be in person at St. Gabriel Education Centre or at another approved facility if you are further than 100km away from St. Albert.

Program Delivery:

Online learning at St. Gabriel Education Centre junior high is asynchronous with daily check-ins with a teacher. Teachers may also ask students to attend online at other various times to work with them.

  • Synchronous Learning:
    • Synchronous learning is the kind of learning that happens in real time. This means that you, your classmates, and your teacher interact in a specific virtual place, through a specific online medium, at a specific time.
  • Asynchronous Learning:
    • Asynchronous learning happens on your schedule. While your teacher will provide learning activities and assignments for completion and evaluation, you have the ability to access and satisfy these requirements within a flexible time frame. Methods of asynchronous learning include self-guided lesson modules, streaming video content, and posted lecture notes.

St. Gabriel Education Centre believes that like any skill, online learning requires increased support and guidance. As students gain experience, confidence, and success, more independence can be afforded to students. Often high school students require online learning for increased flexibility in their schedule due to high level activities, work, outside commitments, the online junior high program is developed to help students gain the online learning skills they require to be successful in high school.

Our current online students report that they love online learning, they love their teachers and they are doing better in school than they did when they were in person.

This is a program of choice within Greater St. Albert Catholic School Division. All program offerings will be contingent on numbers. If a course or grade does not have significant enrolment it may not be available.

Assessment Reporting in Junior High

Our teachers report all student grades on PowerSchool. Parents can sign up for an account to view their child's grades. St. Gabe's runs on a semester system (rather than trimesters). We have an online report card at the end of semester one in January. Parents can log into their PowerSchool account to see grades and comments. In June, digital report cards will be emailed home to parents/legal guardians.

To set up your account in PowerSchool, you will need your account login and password which the administration can send to you. Click HERE for the instructions to set up an account.

Once you have an account, please download the PowerSchool Mobile App from your app store. Our Division code is QNMM. Please check out the video for how to set up the app.
